Movie Spotlight: The Stink of Flesh
My favorite independent zombie movie right now is THE STINK OF FLESH. This movie is above and beyond the typical steaming pile of poo which characterizes many of today's indie horror films. Writer/director Scott Phillips raises THE STINK OF FLESH out of the poo with nothing more than a poop load of skillz, a micro budget, and a dedicated cast and crew. THE STINK OF FLESH takes place in modern America overrun by zombies with few survivors remaining. If you think you've seen this story before, think again. Without spoiling too much of the plot, let me just say that alternative relationships, shackles, and segments of toy race car track all play a part in giving this movie a decidedly different...ah...flavor. And no, THE STINK OF FLESH isn't a porno if that's what you're thinking. It's an ass-kicking-zombie-fun-fest with a little extra spice tossed into the mix. Speaking of ass kicking, the fight scenes in STINK were shot with an eye towards quality. Choreographed by Kurly Tlapoyawa, who stars as "Matool", the fight scenes demonstrate that "low budget" doesn't have to equal crappy action. When asked about how he got involved in the project, Kurly replied: "Initially I was just supposed to do the fight choreography. Scott and I would have lunch once a week and talk about the project. I would throw a few ideas at him, most of which he kept, like the hammer and nails. I just started hounding him to let me play the lead since it would make things a lot easier as far as the fights were concerned. I guess he didn't want me to play Matool, but I wore him down." Regarding the strangest thing that happened during shooting, Tlapoyawa said: "Our makeup artist vanished into the desert on the most Special FX heavy day of shooting. You can see it all in the making of documentary featured on the DVD." I also asked him about the funniest thing that happened. "Man, that's hard to say," said Kurly. "All kinds of crazy shit was going on. For me, it would have to be when Scott's mom walked into me standing naked in the hall. This can also be seen on the making of documentary." Ah...good times, good times. THE STINK OF FLESH must be a part of your DVD collection if you love independent movies, if you love horror movies, or if you're an independent filmmaker. You can buy it from Tempe Video.

Do You Have A Secret?
Do you have a secret that no one else knows? Share it with the world at Postsecret.
Although not film related, Postsecret is a site where people share their secrets on anonymous postcards. It's strangely facinating.

Stanlee Houston: Horror Artist
Artist Stanlee Houston is offering his original "Chainsaw" painting in a raffle at the Cinema Wasteland show on Saturday, October 1, 2005. Only $2.00 per chance to win this great painting!
Stanlee admits this is a rare piece. "I've never painted this large before (4'x3'). I usually paint no larger than 22"x30", but this large painting gave me a freedom that I haven't previously experienced," said Houston, "I really enjoyed this one."
Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
